Ancient Ayurvedic Drug Removes Tooth With No Blood or Pain

A family in the northern Indian city of Jammu has the recipe for a rare drug that can painlessly remove a tooth without anesthesia or surgery. As part of an ancient medical heritage, the family has been using this drug for centuries, passing down the recipe for generations. Rattan Singh, who works in a small clinic on a side street of the Gumat Bazaar in Jammu city, is one of the recipe holders.

On a cold January day, Vijay Kumar, age 67, came into Singh’s clinic with an aching tooth. Singh applied his concoction soaked in cotton to the area around the tooth, and within a minute, had it removed.

There was no bleeding and no pain. “I didn’t even know what happened,” Kumar said.

The drug is transparent like water but smells very strong. According to Singh it can catch fire like gasoline. He hasn’t made the drug himself; what he has was made by his grandfather, and he still has about a quart of it left.

Singh’s father and grandfather left him and his four brothers, who also have clinics on the same street, with four remedies older than 100 years, which they are still using. While Singh is still a traditional dentist, his brothers have become dental mechanics, certified by the government.

“Others do possess this drug, but they keep it a secret,” Singh said. He only uses it when a customer requests it, saying he believes it affected his now-deceased father’s eyesight.

History

Singh and his brothers are part of a community of Bhat Sikhs or Bhatras, a community whose ancestors were scholars and priests who lived on the now dry Saraswati River between India and Pakistan.

Brahmin in origin, they became followers of Guru Nanak, who is the grandfather of the Sikh religion. One of Guru Nanak’s followers, ruler Raj Shivnabh, had a grandson who became a poet and scholar. He was called Bhat Rai, or the “Raj of poets” for his literary skill, and the name Bhatras evolved from “Bhat Rai.” Bhat means “bard” in Sanskrit, and the Bhat Sikhs are Sikh bards or scholars.

Today the Bhatras can still be seen in the narrow lanes of the Gumat Bazaar, sitting at small tables with acrylic teeth and old dentures on display to attract clients.

Singh said his father, who came to the region when it was still ruled by a king, also used to practice this way.

“He would sit in the public junction and offer his services to people. Slowly people came to know about him, and we are carrying forward that legacy,” he said, showing an old leaflet that his father used to publicize his services.

Affordable Dental Care

While they mostly work in the open street, don’t wear protective gloves, and some of their tools look like they belong in a carpenter’s shop, many people still come to them because they are affordable and effective.

“I had a client in Delhi. He told another high-ranking officer from Maharashtra [a coastal state about 700 miles southwest of Delhi], and he came all the way looking for me in this lane in Jammu,” Singh said.

To remove an aching tooth, Singh charged a woman only 120 rupees ($2).

Another woman approached Singh to wire her daughter’s teeth. “I went to a private [modern dentist] clinic,” she said. “They asked me for 21,000 rupees ($350).” Singh charged 800 rupees ($13) for the same job.

Unfortunately for Singh, this means he can’t make a living from his practice.

“My father told me not to cheat anyone, so I can’t charge them exorbitant amounts of money,” he said. “Since I cannot charge extra, I cannot survive practicing this only.”

He has started a small electronics business and survives by renting property in the main market nearby.

And it looks as though the practice of traditional dentistry will not be carried on in his family much longer.

Singh’s brothers have already given up the practice and his children aren’t interested in practicing traditional dentistry either. His apathy toward his medicinal heritage is also apparent, he says he doesn’t want to practice anymore and wants to find a new career in another industry.

But until then, he is a living testament of the power of traditional healing.

There are different types of stomach ache - problems of gas, burning sensation, shooting pain, stomach ache lasting for long intervals, etc. Most of the stomach problems are caused due to the food we eat and contaminated water. If you drink clean and fresh water, food and liquids, follow all the rules of cleanliness, and take a balanced diet of nutritious food then you protect yourself from most of the stomach related diseases. Do not consume paan masala , gutkha (tobacco), high fatty food, oil, sour, or spicy food. Quit smoking and stop drinking alcohol. Eat pure vegetarian food instead of meat. One of the main reason for constipation, dysentery and acidity is stress. Protect yourself from stress under all circumstances. Keep your mind cool and drain out unnecessary tensions.

How to Help Your Back Feel Good

One of the most important things you can do to help yourself recover from back pain is to stay mobile. A day or two of bed rest is fine if you're really hurting, but after that, muscles begin to atrophy, which will make your back muscles weaker and make future injuries and pain more likely. So try to stay mobile, even if you just take short walks while you recover. Here are some treatments that may help you get around more comfortably:

Hot and cold therapy: Cold packs can help reduce swelling and inflammation if used the first day or two after injury. After that, the warmth of heating pads or hot water bottles can help relieve muscle tension and spasms.

Pain medications: Over-the-counter acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin can help provide short-term relief of back pain. But don't exceed the dosing instructions. And see your doctor if your situation does not improve.

Rub-on relief: Pain-relieving ointments, gels, creams, and salves are applied directly to the skin and may help reduce stiffness and muscle soreness.

The good news is that about 90% of people with acute low back pain get better within 4 to 6 weeks.

If you have regular complains of pains in the legs, then there are some simple exercises you can do in order to get relief from them. Some of them are described:-
a) Lie on your back on a firm bed. Wear some loose clothing over the legs, such as shorts or pajamas. Raise your legs gradually in the air, as far as they can go. The heels should point skywards. Hold the legs in this stretched position for about ten seconds and then bring them down again. Do this five times per session, and repeat the exercise thrice a day.
b) Alternatively you can stand facing a wall at an arm’s length distance from it. Stretch out your arms and touch the wall with your open palms. Then slowly pull yourself forward (towards the wall). Feel the stretching pressure building up in your legs. Hold yourself in this stretched position for about ten seconds and then let go. Do this five times per session, and repeat the exercise thrice a day.

If you have leg pains in the joints due to arthritis, then crush two to three cloves of garlic and add them to a glass of diluted milk. Boil it to quarter its amount and drink it just before bedtime.
Applying a hot pack or fomenting the leg with steam helps to improve circulation in the leg and eases the pain. Even applying cold packs helps. This will reduce the blood flow into the leg region and help the muscle to relax.
Put one part of camphor in twenty parts of mustard oil. Keep this in the sun till the time the camphor properly dissolves in the oil. Use this oil to massage the leg on a daily basis.
If you get a sudden sprain in the leg, then prepare a paste of turmeric with lime and salt and apply it.

Muscle strain, a pulled muscle, or a sprained ankle can all be painful enough to prevent normal activity for quite a while.
Whether caused by an accident, over work, or some type of medical issue, these maladies result in muscle pain that can often be treated by natural home remedies.
Once other causes of the pain have been eliminated and a broken bone has been ruled out, home remedies can keep swelling and pain under control. Try some of the following home remedies for good results:
  • Use sesame oil to char a fourth cup of pepper; rub on a muscle strain to relieve pain.
  • Soak an ankle sprain in warm water with Epsom salts to increase blood circulation and reduce inflammation.
  • Immediately wrap the damaged muscle in ice to prevent swelling; follow this with alternating heat treatments.
  • Use an ace bandage to give support and control swelling, but be sure to wrap it loose enough to prevent circulation problems.
  • Take ibuprophen or other over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drug throughout the day to reduce puffiness.
  • Elevate a sprained ankle until the swelling subsides.
  • Steep eight cloves of fresh garlic in boiling mustard oil until the cloves blacken; cool, and rub on the pulled muscle twice a day.
  • Sip ginger tea when experiencing muscle pain to alleviate discomfort.
  • Apply a paste made from mustard oil and turmeric to the damaged area and cover with a warm cloth sack filled with salt.
  • Boil sprigs of fresh dill in sesame oil and let it cool. Apply this ointment to the sore muscles.
  • Allow hot water in the shower to hit directly on the injured muscle to massage and relax it.
