EFFECTIVE HOME REMEDIES FOR BABIES

EFFECTIVE HOME REMEDIES FOR BABIES

"Home remedies are just supplementary approaches. Always seek a qualified physicians advise for any illnesses."

Below are some home remedies, which I have heard of, read about and some which are tried and tested and proven to be effective time and again. I owe a lot to my parents who believe strongly in the power of herbs and home remedies. My father has written down many remedies, some of which Iam putting in for the benefit of the people at large. I would love to have contributions from visitors too.

Babies

Our precious little ones. We would’nt want anything to happen to them, but it is well known that the immune systems of babies below the age of one year are immature. Hence, they are very susceptible to falling sick with slight changes in weather, diet, etc. Indians don’t like to give babies western medicines at the drop of the hat, it is for this reason that most Indian households stock up on medicinal herbs to tackle common situations such as gripes in the middle of the night or a sudden rise in body temperature. These are also popularly known as Dadi Ma ke nuskhe

Home Remedy (Naatu Vaidyam & Ayurveda)

In India all new born babies are given some herbs (These herbs refer to Naatu Vaidyam and Ayurveda) which are freshly rubbed on stone with some water and administered to the babies after bath, this is known as janam ghutti in the north and in Tamil it is called Orakyara Marundhu (Herbs which are rubbed and administered). Each herb which is part of the janam ghutti has a function, which not only strengthens the digestive system, prevents the child from getting coughs, colds, fevers and infections, induces good sleep patterns and brings about general well being in the baby.

According to Indian tradition, whenever an infant cries abnormally for a long period of time, the first step should be to change his clothes and make him wear loose, comfortable, fresh clothing. It is advisable to avoid synthetic clothing as this affects the baby's sensitive skin and may cause itching and a rash. If the baby continues crying, lightly press the baby's stomach, ears and back. The baby will react immediately if it is experiencing pain in any of these areas.

Home remedies for Stomach Ailments

STOMACH PAIN (COLIC)

If a baby (less than nine months of age) has a pain in the stomach, the recommended remedy is to crush 10 to 15 grains of dill seed (known as “Suva” in India) in a teaspoonful of water. This extract should be mixed with a few drops of mother's milk and administered to the baby.

Home Remedies for Coughing in Children

Children are vulnerable to cold and flu, and this is the reason that it should be prevented from becoming severe. Home remedies can work in favour of hildren because it shortens the duration of cold and cough. Mentioned below are some of the home-made solutions that are more effective than over-the-counter cough medications to treat coughing in children:

1. Honey Syrup – Honey is a natural antibiotic, replete with exceptional ability to kill pathogenic bacteria through several mechanisms. Moreover, honey is equally effective to heal human cells that are important for the immune response. You need to add 2 tablespoons of vegetable glycerine to honey for preparation of honey syrup. Make sure you soften honey by warming it for a brief time in a microwave before mixing it with glycerine.

2. Salt Water Gargling – Gargling with salt water helps to soothe a sore throat by clearing mucus from the throat. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt to warm water and stir it well. Check if it isn’t too sour for your kid. . If not then go ahead and add 2-3 drops of lemon in it solution. Gargling for three to four times a day will make him feel better.

Before your child gargles let him practise gargling with plain water. Make it seem fun activity by teaching him gargling sound. You can do so by gargling before them. Make sure:

he holds water in his throat without swallowing it,
spits out water rather than swallowing it.

4. Honey and Cinnamon Powder – Heat one tablespoon of honey and add a pinch of cinnamon powder to it.

5. Turmeric Milk – Heat up one cup milk and add 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder in it.

6. Humidifier and Hot Bath – Using a humidifier also can help ease cough and just cold. Similarly, hot tub bath can help treating coughing in children by loosening secretions in the nose.

Natural Home Remedies for Diaper Rash

While the causes aren't pleasant, the solutions to stopping this rash are straightforward, and can be accomplished with these simple home remedies. You can cure the rash in a few days and, with a little effort, keep baby rash free for the remainder of diaperhood.
Home Remedies from the Cupboard

Baking soda. If baby's bottom is very raw, try giving a sitz bath for 10 minutes, 3 times per day. Add 2 tablespoons baking soda to the tub of warm water.

Cornstarch. A nice patting of cornstarch helps dry up damp areas and reduces friction caused by elastic in diapers. When applying, first shake the cornstarch into your hand far from the baby's face. Avoid store-bought talcum powders, as recent studies have shown that talcum is dangerous for babies to inhale.

Maalox. This medicine does more than treat heartburn and stomach upset in adults. It can prevent diaper rash on babies by cooling irritated skin and neutralizing acid. With a cotton ball, apply a small amount of the liquid to baby's bottom. Allow to dry before diapering.

Oatmeal. Add 1 tablespoon dried oatmeal to your baby's bath. It's soothing and helps protect the skin.

Vinegar. Urine is an extremely alkaline solution and can burn the skin just like an acid. To balance out the equation, try adding 1/2 cup white vinegar to the rinse water when you wash the baby's diapers. The vinegar helps neutralize the ammonia found in urine, gets rid of any soap buildup, and gets rid of diaper smells. You can also go directly to the source by wiping the baby's bottom with a solution of 8 parts water to 1 part vinegar.
Home Remedies from the Refrigerator

Cranberry juice. When urine soaks the diaper region, the result is a high pH that irritates the skin and promotes diaper rash. A solution for older infants is to give them 2 to 3 ounces of cranberry juice. Constituents in the juice prevent bacteria from sticking to the bladder, which also helps prevent infection.

Teething Relief:

While you can't take on your baby'steething discomfort, you can help take it away with these mom-tested remedies.

1. Chewing. Teething babies love to chew, and for good reason: The gumming action provides counterpressure, which relieves the aching pressure of new pearly whites pushing up and out into the mouth. Bumpy rubber teething rings, rattles, and other teething toys work well (including — your baby has probably figured out — the plastic bumper on a crib rail). Chewing is even more effective when the object is icy cold and numbs the gum. Try a frozen wet washcloth, or, to combine a snack with chilly relief, give frozen fruits like bananas and plums in a baby feeder mesh bag (so large chunks of gummed-off food can't pose a choking risk), but only under adult supervision and with baby sitting or propped upright.

2. Rubbing. Your finger rubbed firmly on baby's gums can provide the same soothing counterpressure. Your baby may balk at first because it seems to hurt initially, but the counterpressure soon brings relief.

3. Cold drinks. A bottle of icy cold water can offer chilly relief to achy gums for babies over six months (when water can be introduced), or, if baby doesn't take a bottle or balks at sucking, give (ice-free) water in a cup.

4. Cold food. Like icy food to suck on, chilled food to eat, such as yogurt, blended peaches, and applesauce (once they've already been introduced to your baby), can be more appetizing than warm or room-temperature foods, and can ease achy gums.

5. Pain relief. If chewing, rubbing, and sucking chilly foods don't do the trick, break out the baby acetaminophen, or try a topical numbing agent or pain reliever — but only after checking with your pediatrician.

Ayurvedic and Home Remedies For Mouth Ulcers...

Mouth ulcers may develop in response to a mouth injury such as dental procedures or aggressive tooth cleaning. They can be triggered by emotional stress, dietary deficiencies (especially iron, folic acid, or vitamin B12), menstrual periods, hormonal changes, food allergies, and similar situations. They occur most commonly with viral infections. The pains may be sharp or sticking if the mouth is dry or smarting and raw if the mouth is full of saliva. These ulcers may be broad and superficial or deep and narrow. Small ulcers may combine together and may form large ulcers on the side of the tongue or in the buccal cavities.
Following are some of the identifiers for mouth ulcers and the ways it can be treated-

Hormone Change – Mouth ulcers in young women can be treated by hormonal therapy.
Nutritional Imbalances – Nutritional imbalances can also cause mouth ulcer. Deficiency of vitamin B12, folic acid and iron can trigger the formation of mouth ulcers. When patients are administered iron, folic acid and vitamin B12, the mouth ulcers heal faster.
Digestion Problems – Indigestion and acute acidity can also cause mouth ulcers.
Stress – Stress can also cause these sores. Vitamin B helps the body deal with stress conditions.

Here are some simple and effective tips that can be used to prevent mouth ulcers or treat ulcers and sores in the mouth. If you have mouth ulcers that are persistent or severe, you should seek advice from a healthcare professional to rule out any serious underlying cause.

1. Mouth ulcers can be the result of a lack of vitamin C. Drink plenty of orange juice.

2. Create a mouthwash with water and a small amount of sodium bicarbonate to cleanse the mouth.

3. Fresh coconut milk is an excellent liquid to gargle with. Use three or four times a day to keep the mouth clean and ease the pain of an ulcer.

4. If you don’t have any coconut milk, rinsing and gargling with cold and then hot water can be beneficial for an ulcer.

5. Also, adding a little salt to water and gargling with it can aid healing.

6. Crisps, toast and nuts can have sharp edges. When chewed, these can cause small cuts to the lining of the mouth. If the cut becomes infected it can lead to an ulcer (especially avoid these foods if you prone to mouth ulcers anyway). Also avoid chewing gum which can cause you to bite the inside of your mouth.

7. Peppermint oil is great for immediate relief from the pain and irritation of an ulcer.

8. Raw onions are good for ulcers as they contain sulphur. Eat them in salads.

9. A cold tea bag placed on an ulcer will give relief and the tannin will dry out the sore.

10. Over the counter antacids (Rennie, Remegel etc.) can help lower the acidity levels in the mouth and prevent the onset of mouth ulcers.

11. Don’t use a hard bristled toothbrush.

12. Change your toothbrush on a monthly basis.

13. Use toothpaste that has sodium bicarbonate rather than a fluoride heavy paste.

14. Warm vinegar and half a tablespoon of salt rinsed around the mouth three times a day for thirty seconds is great for healing ulcers but a little painful.

15. Chew Tulis (also known as holy basil leaves) five or six times a day and then sip water.

16. Rinse around your mouth with milk of magnesia to coat mouth ulcers and provide soothing relief.

17. Make sure your diet contains plenty of soured milk products such as yoghurt, cottage cheese and buttermilk (unless you have a dairy intolerance).

18. Indian gooseberry root bark powder (1tsp) coupled with honey (1tsp) makes a paste that can be applied directly onto the ulcer to provide relief and healing.

19. Cut out animal protein for a couple of weeks (fish, meat) as this increases acidity in the body and slows down the healing process.

20. Beer! Great excuse to have a drink but swish it around your mouth and you’ll get relief from your ulcers.

Dadi Ma Ke Nuskhe For Jaundice...Home Remedies

Jaundice is a yellow discoloration of the skin, mucous membranes, and the whites of the eyes caused by increased amounts of bilirubin in the blood. Jaundice is a sign of an underlying disease process.Jaundice is also known as “पीलिया [peeliya], पाण्डु रोग , कमला रोग etc.” It is also known as (also known asicterus. Jaundice is often seen in liver disease such as hepatitis or liver cancer. Jaundice is a yellowish pigmentation of the skin. Jaundice and liver problems usually go together hand to hand. Jaundice may be a sign that a person is suffering from a some liver problems.

Jaundice Causes

Jaundice may be caused by several different disease processes. It is helpful to understand the different causes of jaundice by identifying the problems that disrupt the normal bilirubin metabolism and/or excretion.

Pre-hepatic (before bile is made in the liver)

Jaundice in these cases is caused by rapid increase in the breakdown and destruction of the red blood cells (hemolysis), overwhelming the liver's ability to adequately remove the increased levels of bilirubin from the blood.

Examples of conditions with increased breakdown of red blood cells include:
malaria,
sickle cell crisis,
spherocytosis,
thalassemia,
glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenasedeficiency (G6PD),
drugs or other toxins, and
autoimmune disorders.

Hepatic (the problem arises within the liver)

Jaundice in these cases is caused by the liver's inability to properly metabolize and excrete bilirubin. Examples include:
hepatitis (commonly viral or alcohol related),

cirrhosis,
drugs or other toxins,
Crigler-Najjar syndrome,
Gilbert's syndrome, and
cancer.

Post-hepatic (after bile has been made in the liver)

Jaundice in these cases, also termed obstructive jaundice, is caused by conditions which interrupt the normal drainage of conjugated bilirubin in the form of bile from the liver into the intestines.

Causes of obstructive jaundice include:
gallstones in the bile ducts,
cancer (pancreatic and gallbladder/bile duct carcinoma),
strictures of the bile ducts,
cholangitis,
congenital malformations,
pancreatitis,
parasites,
pregnancy, and

Newborn jaundice.

Jaundice in newborn babies can be caused by several different conditions, although it is often a normal physiological consequence of the newborn's immature liver. Even though it is usually harmless under these circumstances, newborns with excessively elevated levels of bilirubin from other medical conditions (pathologicjaundice) may suffer devastating brain damage (kernicterus) if the underlying problem is not addressed. Newborn jaundice is the most common condition requiring medical evaluation in newborns.

The following are some common causes of newborn jaundice:

Physiological jaundice

This form of jaundice is usually evident on the second or third day of life. It is the most common cause of newborn jaundice and is usually a transient and harmless condition. Jaundice is caused by the inability of the newborn's immature liver to process bilirubin from the accelerated breakdown of red blood cells that occurs at this age. As the newborn's liver matures, the jaundice eventually disappears.

Maternal-fetal blood group incompatibility (Rh, ABO)

This form of jaundice occurs when there is incompatibility between the blood types of the mother and the fetus. This leads to increased bilirubin levels from the breakdown of the fetus' red blood cells (hemolysis).

Breast milk jaundice

This form of jaundice occurs in breastfed newborns and usually appears at the end of the first week of life. Certain chemicals in breast milk are thought to be responsible. It is usually a harmless condition that resolves spontaneously. Mothers typically do not have to discontinue breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding jaundice

This form of jaundice occurs when the breastfed newborn does not receive adequate breast milk intake. This may occur because of delayed or insufficient milk production by the mother or because of poor feeding by the newborn. This inadequate intake results in dehydration and fewer bowel movements for the newborn, with subsequent decreased bilirubin excretion from the body.

Cephalohematoma (a collection of blood under the scalp)

Sometimes during the birthing process, the newborn may sustain a bruise or injury to the head, resulting in a blood collection/blood clot under the scalp. As this blood is naturally broken down, sudden elevated levels of bilirubin may overwhelm the processing capability of the newborn's immature liver, resulting in jaundice.

Sex Life after Menopause...Tips

Menopause may be the final phase in a woman's reproductive cycle, but it's the beginning of a whole new chapter in her life. A giant myth surrounding this life stage is that menopause means the end of sex. The reality is that your sex life postmenopause will be much like your sex life premenopause: It's entirely what you make of it.
Naturally, there are some challenges to overcome and changes to get used to. The first step is to educate yourself about what to expect as you approach and pass through this phase. Physically, tissue changes may decrease genital sensation and lubrication, and your hormones can cause dramatic fluctuations in temperature (hot flashes). Emotionally, you may notice mood and energy changes that may negatively affect your libido.
Menopause is a term given to the period of cessation of women’s monthly periods. The duration of menopause can last for one to two year at a stretch. The age of natural menopause ranges from 40 to 61 years, though the median age is considerably earlier i.e. 44 years.

Menopause is considered to be a difficult time as it brings various health issues with it. Changes in sex drive, vaginal dryness, heart palpitations, memory loss, weight gain, mood swings and hot flashes are some of the common symptoms of menopause. The changes in sex drive and the general distress due to the other symptoms adversely affects the sex life after menopause.

Sex Life after Menopause

According to a recent study conducted in UK, the post menopausal women have better sex ife than they had before menopause. Results of this study indicate that 65% of women reported to have happier sex life since they need not worry about the unplanned pregnancies.

Women often have misconception and worries pertaining to their sex life after menopause. They are afraid that their partner may no longer be sexually interested in her. Such fears stem from the fact that after menopause one tends to lose their libido. Factors effecting sex life after menopause:

Emotional well-being of women- Emotional state of women is an important influencing factor in post-menopause sex life. If a woman is constantly worried about looks of her body, the state of mind can have negative influence on her sex drive. During menopause women experience mood swings but post menopause majority of women report to have more fun in their daily activities. Almost all the women report to be experiencing greater sense of independence. If you are facing emotional distress even after the menopause period then it is advisable to take medical assisstance in postmenopause phase as well.
Physical well-being of women- It is only small percentage of women that report to have reduced sexual drive due to physical changes during menopause. For instance, vaginal dryness can make sex an uncomfortable experience. This is so because lower estrogen level decreases blood supply to vagina causing low vaginal lubrication. The physical health concerns can also significantly hamper the sexual desire of women. Lowered levels of progesterone, estrogen and testosterone are one of the reasons of decreased sexual drive (libido).Menopause may be the final phase in a woman's reproductive cycle, but it's the beginning of a whole new chapter in her life. Better Sex after Menopause: Tips and Tricks to Improve your sex life.

There are a lot of myths floating around about how your sex life will be affected after menopause. Before you start to worry about not having sex for the rest of your life, do a little bit of research because, in reality, it’s not going to be all that bad. In fact, only about 20-30% of women experience a decrease in sexual activity.

Tip 1: Get your head in the game.

As a society, we think that sex is only for the young and fertile making it hard to accept your own aging sexuality. Most people have their first sexual encounter as a teenager or young adult, and that first impression stays with us as we age and become more mature. However, the time after menopause can be a time to experiment and try new things without having to worry about the pregnancy factor. Also, stress can have a big impact on your sex drive. Take more relaxation time to deal with the stress in a healthy way.

Tip 2: Hit the gym

Well maybe not literally, but it may be a good idea to work out those muscles on a regular basis. You can strengthen your vagina through Kegel exercises, which will allow you to experience stronger orgasms, sometimes better than when you were at a younger age. To do this, tighten your pelvic muscles like you had to use the bathroom, count to ten, release and repeat. Do this ten times, four times a day.

Tip 3: Break out the lube

If you are in the 20% of women who experience vaginal dryness, try some different type of lubrication or moisturizing. Water-based lubrications like KY-Jelly and Astroglide are good for use during intercourse. Avoid Vaseline and other products that are not water-soluble because this may cause vaginal infections. Creams and moisturizers can provide relief, but unlike lubricants, these work directly on the vaginal tissue.

Tip 4: Get with the hormones

A big reason that your sex drive may have diminished is due to that fact that your hormone levels are declining. There are a few ways to combat this, whether it be HRT, or a natural supplement like Feminestra. Being that this is a Feminestra blog, I will recommend it, but you should consult your doctor on the best treatment option for you.

Tip 5: Check the medicine cabinet

In today’s society it’s not uncommon to be on one or more prescription medications. However, the side effects of these meds can be affecting your sex life. Things like painkillers and antidepressants are some of the worst offenders. Talk to your doctor or physician to find out which medications or medication combinations could be affecting your libido.
