15 Tips for Good Memory

Everyone can take steps to improve their memory, and with time and practice most people can gain the ability to memorize seemingly impossible amounts of information. Whether you want to win the World Memory Championships, ace your history test, or simply remember where you put your keys, this article can get you started. Scientists believe that exercising your brain can create a ‘cognitive reserve’ that will help you stay sharp as you age.

1. Convince yourself that you do have a good memory that will improve. Too many people get stuck here and convince themselves that their memory is bad, that they are just not good with names, that numbers just slip out of their minds for some reason. Erase those thoughts and vow to improve your memory. Commit yourself to the task and bask in your achievements it’s hard to keep motivated if you beat yourself down every time you make a little bit of progress.

2. Keep your brain active. The brain is not a muscle, but regularly “exercising” the brain actually does keep it growing and spurs the development of new nerve connections that can help improve memory. By developing new mental skills especially complex ones such as learning a new language or learning to play a new musical instrument and challenging your brain with puzzles and games you can keep your brain active and improve its physiological functioning.

3. Exercise daily. Regular aerobic exercise improves circulation and efficiency throughout the body, including in the brain, and can help ward off the memory loss that comes with aging. Exercise also makes you more alert and relaxed, and can thereby improve your memory uptake, allowing you to take better mental “pictures.”

4. Reduce stress. Chronic stress, although it does not physically damage the brain, can make remembering much more difficult. Even temporary stresses can make it more difficult to effectively focus on concepts and observe things. Try to relax, regularly practice yoga or other stretching exercises, and see a doctor if you have severe chronic stress.

5. Eat well and eat right. There are a lot of herbal supplements on the market that claim to improve memory, but none have yet been shown to be effective in clinical tests (although small studies have shown some promising results for ginkgo biloba and phosphatidylserine). A healthy diet, however, contributes to a healthy brain, and foods containing antioxidants, broccoli, blueberries, spinach, and berries, for example and Omega-3 fatty acids appear to promote healthy brain functioning. Feed your brain with such supplements as Thiamine, Vitamin E, Niacin and Vitamin B-6. Grazing, eating 5 or 6 small meals throughout the day instead of 3 large meals, also seems to improve mental functioning (including memory) by limiting dips in blood sugar, which may negatively affect the brain.

6. Take better pictures. Often we forget things not because our memory is bad, but rather because our observational skills need work. One common situation where this occurs (and which almost everyone can relate to) is meeting new people. Often we don’t really learn people’s names at first because we aren’t really concentrating on remembering them. You’ll find that if you make a conscious effort to remember such things, you’ll do much better. One way to train yourself to be more observant is to look at an unfamiliar photograph for a few seconds and then turn the photograph over and describe or write down as many details as you can about the photograph. Try closing your eyes and picturing the photo in your mind. Use a new photograph each time you try this exercise, and with regular practice you will find you’re able to remember more details with even shorter glimpses of the photos.

7. Give yourself time to form a memory. Memories are very fragile in the short-term, and distractions can make you quickly forget something as simple as a phone number. The key to avoid losing memories before you can even form them is to be able to focus on the thing to be remembered for a while without thinking about other things, so when you’re trying to remember something, avoid distractions and complicated tasks for a few minutes.

8. Create vivid, memorable images. You remember information more easily if you can visualize it. If you want to associate a child with a book, try not to visualize the child reading the book that’s too simple and forgettable. Instead, come up with something more jarring, something that sticks, like the book chasing the child, or the child eating the book. It’s your mind make the images as shocking and emotional as possible to keep the associations strong.

9. Repeat things you need to learn. The more times you hear, see, or think about something, the more surely you’ll remember it, right? It’s a no-brainer. When you want to remember something, be it your new coworker’s name or your best friend’s birthday, repeat it, either out loud or silently. Try writing it down; think about it.

10. Group things you need to remember. Random lists of things (a shopping list, for example) can be especially difficult to remember. To make it easier, try categorizing the individual things from the list. If you can remember that, among other things, you wanted to buy four different kinds of vegetables, you’ll find it easier to remember all four.

11. Organize your life. Keep items that you frequently need, such as keys and eyeglasses, in the same place every time. Use an electronic organizer or daily planner to keep track of appointments, due dates for bills, and other tasks. Keep phone numbers and addresses in an address book or enter them into your computer or cell phone. Improved organization can help free up your powers of concentration so that you can remember less routine things. Even if being organized doesn’t improve your memory, you’ll receive a lot of the same benefits (i.e. you won’t have to search for your keys anymore).

12. Try meditation. Research now suggests that people who regularly practice “mindfulness” meditation are able to focus better and may have better memories. Mindfulness (also known as awareness or insight meditation) is the type commonly practiced in Western countries and is easy to learn. Studies at Massachusetts General Hospital show that regular meditation thickens the cerebral cortex in the brain by increasing the blood flow to that region. Some researchers believe this can enhance attention span, focus, and memory.

13. Sleep well. The amount of sleep we get affects the brain’s ability to recall recently learned information. Getting a good night’s sleep “a minimum of seven hours a night ” may improve your short-term memory and long-term relational memory, according to recent studies conducted at the Harvard Medical School.

14. Build your memorization arsenal. Learn pegs, memory palaces, and the Dominic System. These techniques form the foundation for mnemonic techniques, and will visibly improve your memory.

15. Venture out and learn from your mistakes. Go ahead and take a stab at memorizing the first one hundred digits of pi, or, if you’ve done that already, the first one thousand. Memorize the monarchs of England through your memory palaces, or your grocery list through visualization. Through diligent effort you will eventually master the art of memorization.

Studies have shown when we are distracted with these activities while eating, you gain weight by unknowingly eating more food and/or you absorb less nutrition from your food, even if the food is full of nutrition. Allow your mind to relax and enjoy!
  5. After a meal for optimum digestion, your stomach should be half full with “solids”, one quarter full with liquid, and one quarter empty with “air”.
  6. Allow 4-5 hours in between meals. When possible eat at least one meal per day with a family or a group of friends.
  7. Drink very little water with the meals. Wait about 45 minutes and drink good amount of water. NEVER drink ICED water/drinks before, during, and right after the meals. Iced water compromises your digestive fire leading to slow or inefficient digestion.
  8. Do at least once per Week Oleation of your body as per your Body Constitution (Sesame oil for most body constitutions). Oleation is a loving application of oil all over your body with light massaging motions. Leave the oil to soak in for 25 minutes before taking a shower. This nourishes your body while slows down aging. Sesame oil should be cold pressed & can be found in grocery stores.
  9. Exercising 2-3 times a week. This is nothing new; however, I want to include this for some of us who needs extra motivation and reminders. In my gym, I regularly meet some people who can barely walk but they are there doing their thing. I call them just pure inspiration for the rest of us. Aerobics, sports, walking, yoga, weights, and other resistance exercises are all good. Choose your exercises as per your body condition and your goals.
  10. Form a daily and weekly routine! The MOST important part is- STICK to it

Home Remedy for Dark Circles:

1. Using Almond Oil

Almond Oil as we know is an excellent natural emollient and its fine texture and moisturizing properties is perfect for any skin type. Ayurvedic practitioners love Almond Oil and they have been using this oil for dark circles.

Almond Oil is readily available from health and aromatherapy stores as it’s commonly used as a carrier oil. Carefully rubbing a little in to the skin around your eyes each morning and night should leave the skin softer and more supple.

2. Using Tomato and Lemon

Tomato is rich in Vitamin A, C and Iron, whereas lemon can act as “natural bleach”. By combining the two ingredients, you will notice the dark circle will lightens after a few days of treatment.

To conjure this mixture, take one teaspoon fresh tomato juice. Add to it 1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon juice and a little less than a teaspoon of gram flour. Mix all these thoroughly to make a smooth paste. Apply this paste on the dark circles around the eyes and leave for about 10 minutes.

Before it becomes too dry, start removing by rubbing very gently with your fingers. Later, wash your face. This application is recommended once daily. More quantity of the ingredients can be taken in the proportion specified to have sufficient amount to apply on the whole face.

3. Using Cucumber Juice

Cucumber has cooling and astringent properties that are very good for tired eyes. This remedy is a “quick-fix” to any eyes woes.

Squeeze the juice from a cucumber and cool it in the refrigerator for an hour or so. Add a little lemon juice. Make cotton pads and dip into the mixture. Place on your eyes for 15 minutes. The effect is cooling and relaxes your eyes.

Make sure to wash the area thoroughly afterwards and apply a little almond oil around the eyes to moisturize the area.

4. Using Grated Potato

Another effective home remedy is peeled and grated potatoes. Firstly, grate the potato, wrap it in thin cloth and place it over the eyes. Use this overnight at least three times a week.

Make sure to wash the area thoroughly and apply a little cream or oil around the eyes to moisturize the area.

5. Using Metal Spoons

This is one of the most effective “Old Wives Tales” that don’t need much effort. :)

Cool a metal spoon under the cold tap for a few minutes, dry off the water and hold the spoon to your eyes for at least sixty seconds. Be gentle; don’t press too hard.

Ayurvedic and Dietary Treatments for High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure or hypertension is the condition when the blood flow in the arteries and veins is forced under a higher pressure than normal. This can happen due to the weakness of the heart or due to the buildup of cholesterol in the coronary arteries, which can reduce their lumen. Today, most people in the world are suffering from hypertension, though it is not always fatal. Proper medication and a positive lifestyle can make people with higher blood pressures lead a long and happy life. However, neglect can cause severe fatal problems like myocardial infarctions (heart attacks).

High blood pressure is known as Rakta Gata vata in Ayurveda. It can be caused due to vitiation of any of the three doshas, though the contribution of the vata dosha may be more, as it is responsible for the circulation of blood. The following are the main precipitating factors for people with different doshas:-

1. Vata type of Hypertension - This is caused by extreme emotions such as worry, anxiety and stress.

2. Pitta type of Hypertension - This is caused by negative emotions such as hatred, jealousy and feeling for revenge.

3. Kapha type of Hypertension - This is caused by problems with the digestive system.

(1) Useful Herbs in the Treatment of High Blood Pressure

1. Alfalfa (Medicago satina)

Alfalfa contains several elements which are needed in the softening of the hard arteries. This reduces the tension in the arteries and hence helps to treat hypertension.

Ayurveda Tips for High Blood Pressure

Hypertension or high blood pressure is so common today that at least one in ten people aged 40 or above has high BP related problems. This is the pressure that blood exerts on blood vessel walls. High blood pressure occurs when heart works harder to pump blood. Thickening of blood vessels (arteriosclerosis) causes it. This can cause stroke or heart attack. It is therefore very important to keep blood pressure to normal levels. The normal blood pressure is 120/80 mmHg. There are however variations to his readings throughout the day. If the pressure becomes 130/80 mmHg, it is risky condition. If it is 140/90 mm Hg then it is hypertension.

In Ayurvedic teachings, hypertension is the result of the breakdown of all the dosha regions which ultimately causes a derangement in vata dosha and all subsequent treatment is dedicated to straightening out this misalignment and thus returning the sufferer to health. Also such inner, repressed symptoms such as anxiety, fear, unresolved anger and frustration greatly disturb the endocrine system causing it to malfunction and in very severe cases to cease operating totally and fatally. Both of these causes of hypertension need to be addressed immediately and to do this Ayurvedic recommends many ways like:

  1. Balance the three energy types or doshas, Vata, Kapha and Pitta. Ayurvedic practitioners balance these energy types with nutrition, breathing exercises, yoga, mantra meditation, herbal remedies and medicines.
  2. Reduce or eliminate meat, salt, eggs and fats. Follow a vegetarian diet that includes garlic (lahsun), celery (ajmod) and leafy vegetables. You can eat fruits, such as watermelon, and use clarified butter (ghee) as a fat. Eliminate caffeine and tobacco. Exercise on a regular basis.
  3. Depending on the dosha type, your Ayurvedic practitioner may prescribe serpagandha and jatamansi for Vata, sandalwood and sarsaparilla for Pitta and arunja for Kapha. Take these herbal medications in tablet, powder or pill form for the period prescribed by the practitioner.
  4. .Grind garlic into a paste and mix with buttermilk. Drink daily. Mix lemon juice with honey and drink each morning. Mix 1 or 2 spoonfuls of powdered cumin (jeera) and fennel (saunf) seeds to a glass of water. Drink this mixture twice daily.
  5. Use yoga and meditation to lower high blood pressure. The yoga posture called the Corpse Pose or Savasana is beneficial in normalizing blood pressure. While you are in this pose, you also can meditate on a mantra which your practitioner may provide.
  6. Practice pranayama or breathing exercises. Breathing exercises may reduce hypertension, anxiety and stress.
  7. Cleanse the body of toxins. Practitioners recommend abhyanga (massage with herbal oils) and panchakarma (detoxification by sweat baths and induced bowel movements) as effective treatments for this condition.

In order to prevent Hypertension, Ayurveda recommends the following tips:

  • Include in your diet food items of high fiber content. Fruits, vegetables, pulses, cereal, rice, wheat, etc in unprocessed form are good for your heart and body.
  • If you doubt hypertension, avoid alcohol and tobacco. There are however instances when very lower levels of alcohol is actually beneficial in bringing down high blood pressure.
  • Give your body some exercise. Walking for 30 minutes in the morning is enough as a starting up. You can slowly introduce aerobics. You can also start practicing yoga under a skilled master.

Treating Colds and Fever with Ayurveda

Treating the common cold or flu in children with herbal and dietary guidelines is an effective means of supporting and strengthening their immune system. Generally speaking, the common cold is often associated with the cold and damp qualities of kapha and ama (toxins), which cause symptoms such as low appetite, nasal or chest congestion, malaise, and sometimes mild to moderate fever. First and foremost, the child should rest and drink plenty of warm liquids to support the agni (digestive fire) and the elimination of ama. If their appetite is low, because of diminished agni, it is best not to force food upon them, as this could contribute to the formation of ama.

Warm ginger tea is a good remedy to kindle agni and when combined with equal parts Yashti madhu (Licorice root) and a little raw honey it helps liquefy and expectorate phlegm. Because of the possible link between honey and botulism in infants, only high quality, organic raw honey should be used. If there is chest congestion or restricted breathing, then warm Mahanarayan or sesame oil, or ghee with a pinch of rock or black salt, can be massaged onto the chest followed by a eucalyptus steam inhalation. Tulsi (Holy basil) works wonders for soothing coughs, decongesting the lungs and sinuses, as well as lowering a fever by promoting sweating. Tulsitea can be prepared by adding1 teaspoon of Tulsi powder to 1 cup of hot water. This can also be given before bedtime to break a fever when nothing else works. Other typical Ayurvedic formulas for the practitioner to consider in the treatment of common cold, flu, and upper respiratory infections are Sanjivani guti, Tribuvankirti ras, Sitopaladi churna, Talisadi churna, and Lavangadi vati,

Jwara (fever) is the body's natural way of burning ama. It is important not to suppress it whenever possible, although fevers above 102 degrees should be lowered and kept within safe limits. A remarkable home remedy for lowering fever consists in rubbing fresh onion juice to the child's navel region while applying a cool cloth to the forehead to protect the brain. Also, pomegranate or fresh orange juice is nutritious and effective to control fever, but drinking too much can increase ama and orange juice may provoke pitta if it is too sour and acidic, so it should be diluted if taken frequently. The compound Mahasudarshan is also very useful for high fevers. Because of its strong bitter taste, it is best given in tablet form, in doses of 250 to 500 mg with warm water.

Ayurvedic Herbs for Colic and Constipation

Because food is our first and foremost form of nutrition, it should be considered our primary medicine. In Ayurveda many common fruits, vegetables, and culinary spices are used to help with a variety of childhood health complaints without the need for any other treatment. For instance, constipation in young children can be corrected by drinking a cup of warm milk before bedtime with one teaspoon of ghee added to it. Likewise, a good measure consists in including in the diet foods that have a natural laxative effect such as soaked raisins or dates, honey, bran, sesame seeds, mango, papaya, grapes, and fresh figs. Furthermore, encouraging proper eating habits and food combining when possible, sufficient water intake, high quality oils, and providing plenty of high fiber foods can be helpful in the prevention of constipation. In the case of infants, the mother can apply a small amount of castor oil to her nipple before breastfeeding. For babies with intestinal colic, mix equal parts of Cumin, Fennel, and Coriander powder and add 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of this mixture to a cup of hot water, let it steep for 15 to 20 minutes, then strain well. This tea can be given as needed to correct vata in the colon. The mother can also drink it to reduce the qualities of vata in her breast milk. In the case of infants, it is useful to administer the tea with a baby medicine dropper, available in most baby supply sections, and dilute it a little, if needed, to make it more palatable. There are a variety of Ayurvedic herbs and formulas that can be quite effective for constipation in toddlers and children, such as Triphala churna, Sat isabgol, Gandarva haritaki ,or Avipattikara churna, but care should be taken to choose the one that is most appropriate for the overall condition and constitution of the child. Other typical formulas used for colic and intestinal disorders are Eladi churna and Hingwastak churna. It is good to keep in mind that a good dosage for children is about one third the normal adult dosage, and even less for infants. Allopathic laxatives and strong laxative herbs should be avoided.
