3 Ways to Ease Joint Pain this Winter

"Every mile is two in winter" said poet George Herbert. A big chunk of our Facebook fans couldn't agree more, particularly the ones who have arthritis or joint pain. We polled them to find out what triggers their hip and knee pain, and 42 percent blamed cold weather -- by far the leading cause. But can the elements really make your joints ache?

The scientific evidence is conflicting. Some studies find a strong relationship between short, cold, damp days and arthritis flare-ups. Research from Tufts University suggests changes in barometric pressure worsen knee pain in people with arthritis, while colder temps can cause painful changes in joint fluid thickness. Other studies have found little or no link between weather and joint pain.

Whether your aches are sparked by the weather or something else, these three steps can help you feel better.

Eat Healthy - Load up on foods rich in:

Omega-3 fatty acids. Think salmon and nuts to curb inflammation.

Vitamin K. Make meals that feature greens, such as spinach, kale, and cabbage, for their pain-soothing properties.

Vitamin C. Add color to your diet with juicy oranges, sweet red peppers and tomatoes, and other C-rich foods to halt cartilage loss (and resulting pain) that comes with arthritis.

Avoid foods high in omega-6 fatty acids, such as corn oil, which may trigger painful inflammation. Also swap refined grains for whole grains. Early research suggests refined grains have an inflammatory effect, whereas high-fiber whole grains may help reduce inflammation.

Take Supplements:

Glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin may help by nourishing cartilage and increasing lubrication in your joints. A large-scale study funded by the National Institutes of Health found that a daily combo of 1,500 milligrams of glucosamine and 1,200 milligrams of chondroitin might help ease symptoms in people with moderate-to-severe joint pain.

Also make sure you're getting plenty of vitamin D to help keep your bones strong and prevent joint pain. Look for a supplement with 1,000 milligrams of D3 (the kind your body manufactures from sunlight), but check with your doctor first because some supplements can interact with prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

Keep Moving:

One reason cold weather is linked to joint pain is people are less likely to work out when it's chilly and damp. Being a couch potato is bad news for your joints because exercise helps lubricate them to prevent pain. Try these 6 safe, easy exercises for arthritic knees.

Too cold out? Bring your workout indoors -- and don't overdo it! Choose low-impact aerobic moves that are easy on joints, such as walking, and yoga or tai chi, which enhance your range of motion. Lifting weights can also help because it builds joint-supporting muscles.

Ayurvedic Way of Respiration Can Cure Asthma

Proper ways of breathing can cure serious diseases like asthma. One should pay attention to breathing along with practicing yoga asanas. Some important exercises are being mentioned below, which are helpful in controlling this disease.

1. Always sit straight. Whenever you stand, keep your back straight. Fold your lips in the manner they are folded to blow whistle. Then apply pressure and exhale. Count the breaths and slowly double the capacity to stop the breath but do not do it forcibly. Do not stop breath in between the process of inhaling and exhaling because irregular breathing pattern should not be followed in case of asthma.

2. If you are unable to breath and the shoulders and neck muscles become stiff then follow this technique. Bend the left ear downwards so that it touches the left shoulder, repeat the same technique with the right ear. Lift the shoulders in such a way that they touch both the ears. Slowly bring down the shoulders as far as possible and rotate them forward, backward, up and down in a circular motion. Keep the pace of rotation fast at sometimes and slow at other times. When the muscles get relaxed, the breathing also becomes normal and stops the irregular respiration pattern, congestion in the chest, and anxiety.

3. Lie down straight and keep a book on the stomach. Breath through the diaphragm and see that the book moves upwards when you exhale and comes down when you inhale. This exercise should be done everyday for five minutes, it improves the health of the lungs and strengthens the muscles. Gradually increase the duration of the exercise and the weight on the stomach.
A simple exercise to expand the skeleton:

1. Spread the legs equal to the distance of the shoulders, take the hands forwards and exhale, then spread the hands and take them on either side of the body and then backwards. Keep the elbows on the back and try to expand the skeleton and inhale slowly.

2. Spread the legs equal to the distance of the shoulders and stand straight. Now lift both the hands upwards and try to contract the body in the same position. Take slow and deep breaths in this position. You should feel that the skeleton is moving above the spine. Exhale while bringing down the hands and concentrate only on exhaling.

The Cow is a Mobile Medical Dispensary

The cow is a mobile medical dispensary. It is the treasure of medicines. Cow urine therapy is capable of curing many curable and incurable diseases. The holy texts, like Atharva Veda, Charaka Samhita, Rajni Ghuntu, Vridhabhagabhatt, Amritasagar, Bhavaprakash, Sushruta Samhita, etc., contain beautiful description about the medicinal benefits of cow urine. Cow Urine Treatment and Research Center, Indore has conducted a lot of research over the past few years and reached the conclusion that it is capable of curing diabetes, blood pressure, asthma, psoriasis, eczema, heart attack, blockage in arteries, fits, cancer, AIDS, piles, prostrate, arthritis, migraine, thyroid, ulcer, acidity, constipation, gynecological problems, ear and nose problems and several other diseases.

The analysis of cow urine has shown that it contains nitrogen, sulphur, phosphate, sodium, manganese, carbolic acid, iron, silicon, chlorine, magnesium, melci, citric, titric, succinic, calcium salts, Vitamin A, B, C, D, E, minerals, lactose, enzymes, creatinine, hormones and gold. A person falls ill when there is deficiency or excess of these substances inside the body. Cow urine contains all of these substances, which are naturally present in the human body. Therefore consumption of cow urine maintains the balance of these substances and this helps cure incurable diseases.

The Indian culture gives special place to the cow. All the 330 million gods have cow as their prime temple (all devas reside in the cow). Deva means to give, the strength to give, the ability to give more and take the minimum. This is known as Devata. The cow takes very less from us and gives us more. Therefore the Indian people have shown this with the help of strict devotion and dedication. Thus the cow has a prominent place in the Indian life and economy. Wealth, religion, enjoyment and salvation are accomplished with the service of the cow. The Indian farmer used to be known as king, or the giver of grains, due to the tradition developed in India thousands of years back. Our entire life is dependent on the cow.

The whole world takes the cow as their mother. The reason is that the birth-giving mother gives milk to its child only for one or two years, but the mother cow gives milk throughout its life, which is like nectar. A black cow is tied in the Shiva temple, and when we see the Shiva along with the black cow then we are able to overcome the malefic effects of planets in our natal horoscope. When we see the ankles of the cow we protect ourselves from sudden deaths. Circumambulating the cow is equivalent to visiting all of the holy places. As the peepal tree and tulasi plant give oxygen similarly cow is the only animal which purifies the air. If one spoon of pure ghee is poured on burning cow dung (in homa) then they can produce one-ton of pure air, therefore ghee made with cow milk is used in sacrificial fires and havans. There is no better method to remove pollution.

Cow milk, butter, ghee and buttermilk are like nectar. The cow dung is not faeces, but a purifier. It helps produce the best quality grains, fruits, and vegetables when used as manure. Cow urine is a divine medicine and is a natural pesticide for crops. Pure ghee made with cow milk poured on burning cow cakes dung, produces a smoke that subsides the effect of poisonous gas. Cow urine contains copper, which is converted into gold inside the human body. It removes all toxicity. Drinking cow milk gives strength and increases the pure qualities in the human mind.

The horns and back hump of the cow are like two powerful pyramids. We receive the strengths of the stars and sun through the medium of cow dung, milk, curd, ghee, etc. The place where the cow is tied does not produce any vastu related ill effects. If there is any malefic effect of any planet, serving the cow with chapatti and jaggery calms down the malefic effect.

The following are some of my personal experiences treating people with cow urine therapy. A person was suffering with cancer and had been told that they would not survive for long; cow therapy was done on many such cases. Out of the many patients, who were suffering with cancer for the last 4 years, many are now leading a healthy life. In the same way, a diabetes patient who was taking insulin and having a sugar level of 488 or 420 did not have the necessity to take insulin after the treatment of cow urine. In the same way AIDS, asthma, psoriasis, eczema, blood pressure, heart disease, prostrate, piles, etc., also have been cured with this treatment. Premchand Rathore was suffering from asthma and isnophilia. He had palpitations and cough along with phlegm. He is now enjoying a healthy life after taking cow urine therapy. The cough and phlegm reduced. Mrs. Sharda Jalani was having varicose veins and dysmenorrhea. She used to have swollen nerves, pain, and swelling as soon as she used to stand up and it was very painful at the time of menses. She was advised to undergo operation for both of these problems. But she went for cow urine therapy and is now healthy. Omprakash Paul suffered a heart attack. He had high levels of cholesterol and chest pain. After taking cow urine therapy he is able to walk up to four kilometers, he does not get chest pain and his cholesterol level is also normal. Chandmal Gurjar suffered with cancer of the food pipe four years back, he could not take liquids also. Now he is able to eat and drink properly, he is healthy and working in the rice fields. There are thousands of people who have recovered from serious diseases after taking this therapy.

Today many AIDS patients are taking cow urine therapy. People who were suffering with migraine and headache for the past 15 years have recovered within six months of taking this therapy. In the past few years the Cow Urine Treatment and Research Center, Indore has treated 150,000 people. Out of the total patients 85 to 90 percent were also suffering from constipation. There is an old saying that if the stomach is clean half of the diseases get cured automatically. The patients taking cow urine therapy are able to enjoying sound heath within one month of this therapy.

Sushma Khurana had a thyroid complaint. Before taking this therapy her T3 level was 4, T4 was 15, TSH was 0.2. After six months of this treatment T4 was 9.97, TSH was 1.35 and today she is free of this problem. This therapy is also beneficial in the case of eczema, ringworm, itching and other skin problems. Old eczema patients have gained a lot from this therapy. Also school and college aged children can be free from the menace of pimples and acne with this simple therapy.

But is different from the world we see.

Amazing Ayurveda Diet for the Nine Months of Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a wondrous time in a woman’s life. The precious nine months after conception have tremendous impact on the physical and mental wellbeing of the mother and child. One must aim to provide a caring and comforting surrounding at this time. The different phases of pregnancy are divided into trimesters, wherein the needs of the mother and developing fetus are very specific. In the ancient holistic health system of Ayurveda there is a dedicated section regarding pregnancy care. This known as Garbhini Parichaya and has a month by month rendering of traditional care techniques pertaining to ahara (diet), vihara (lifestyle), nidra (sleep) and vichara (thinking). All of these affect maternal health, fetal development as well as lactation and the ability to recover swiftly after childbirth.

The diet is most central to pregnancy. As per Ayurveda the ahara-rasa or energy from the mother’s diet serves certain important functions. One is that the mother herself is nourished to sustain a nurturing womb. The second benefit is that the food aids the fetus to grow and third is the formation of milk in the breasts. Thus, pregnant women need a balanced diet with great nutritional value. Negligence may bear a hefty price as nutrient depravation during pregnancy can cause miscarriage, premature delivery and the birthing of even underweight malnourished infants.

The suggested Ayurveda diet is more or less in line with modern medicine recommended for pregnancy with high proteins, vitamins and minerals. A fundamental dietary rule is eating timely meals that are easy to digest. Food should be eaten warm after being freshly prepared. During the first trimester the fetus is in its formative state. During this time the embryo is nurtured directly through percolation or upsnehan. Hence, more liquid foods consisting of milk, soups, coconut water and juices are recommended. There are certain Ayurveda concoctions that are essential during pregnancy.

Warm milk and a light diet must be followed during the first month. Milk is an ideal food as it is a source of calcium, lactose and butter fat, along with proteins which have anabolic properties. In cases one doesn’t like the taste of milk then it can be flavored with a powder mix of cardamom, almond, dry ginger etc. Pregnant women should never be constipated and two glasses a day is ideal. Milk makes sure that this doesn’t happen.

During the second and third month, medicated milk is important as it comprises of life budding herbs such as vidari (morning glory), brahmi (bacopa), shatavari (asparagus) and yashtimadhu (licorice). The milk can be laced with honey and medicated ghee (grita), especially during the third month. One can also get powdered supplements with these herbs. Brahmi particularly is important as it is said to be a sustainer of life force and also calms the nerves. By the end of the first trimester the fetus depicts physical and sensory development. The heartbeat is audible and motor actions also get activated.

During the next trimester consisting of the fourth, fifth and sixth months, the food reaches the baby via the umbilical chord and not through percolation like before. A healthy diet such as rice, leafy vegetables, milk, medicated ghee, pulses, nuts etc. can be consumed. Fruits of yellow and orange color like gooseberry, apples, orange, carrots etc. can be enjoyed as well as salads or juices.

The fourth month is when the body tissues or dhatus are formed. It is at this time that one is advised to include more of unsalted butter and crystal sugar into the diet. Through the fifth month one should up the number of spoons of ghee to a minimum of at least 7-8 spoons. It should be unadulterated cow’s ghee. This is the stage of blood and muscle formation. In the sixth month the fatty tissue is formed. It’s ideal for medicated ghee with sweetened herbs like licorice and shatavari. This can be consumed early in the morning on an empty stomach. The same regimen can be continued through the first month of the next trimester i.e. the seventh month.

In the course of the seventh month the fetal growth is complete. The organs are defined and skin, nails and hair start to appear. The baby needs the proper nutrition even more at this stage to gain strength. Fat, salt and water can be lessened. Rice kanji with ghee is a superb diet at this time. Basil or tulsi which has anti-spasmodic properties can be used in garnishing food and in salads. One can also try other herbs like ginseng and sariba that act as mild diuretics and urinary antiseptics. From the fourth to the seventh month herbal supplements like guduchi and ashwagandha must be consumed by the mother. These fortify the embryo while strengthening the uterine muscles. They also prevent any kind of dangerous intrauterine growth retardation. Another popular medicinal supplement is kaunch beej or velvet bean.

By the eighth month the mother can consume sweet preparations of rice puddings, wheat vermicelli and semolina halwa. This kind of gruel can be eaten once a day. The pregnant lady can also indulge in 2-3 helpings of calcium rich foods every day. This includes soya beans, raisins, dates, green leafy veggies, guavas etc. The mother can also try out anuvasan basti, an herbal enema under the Panchakarma. This is important for the fetus to acquire a normal position and to attain a suitable state in preparation for labor.

Different types of ghee are an integral part of a pregnant women’s diet. Women can try phala sarpis, a type of medicated ghee concoction from the first month itself. One can also try dadimadi ghritam for growth of the fetus and kalyanaka gritam for mental stimulus of the baby in the womb. At the time of delivery sukhaprasava ghee is ideal as it helps in an easy delivery of the baby.

These are some of the amazing dietary secrets of 5,000 years of child bearing by strong and healthy women. Today, such kinds of herbal food concepts are quickly gaining popularity again due to the great healing significance attached.

Benefits of Eating Basmati Rice

Since centuries rice forms an essential component of the Indian diet. It symbolizes fertility, wealth and good health according to Hindu customs. Ancient priests used it as a component of worship. Even today across cultures, rice is thrown at newlyweds as a blessing of healthy offspring and everlasting prosperity. It is in fact a staple food of India, with most Indian homes serving the same every day. It is said to be the very foundation of nourishment. The food that we eat daily directly affects our natural constitution. Our constitution in turn is based on our inherent doshas. This is why a balanced diet helps to balance the natural dosha presence. Depending on whether one is vata, pitta or kapha dominant, one must design a specific diet for regular nutrition. Ayurveda has a beautiful dietary plan suiting each kind of body type. Different foods are known to produce one of these three dosha aspects as well. Hence, we must have knowledge on the apt food for our inherent constitution.

There are several dozen varieties of rice such as Jasmine, Arboria, Japanese, Brown rice, Red rice, Black rice, Wild rice, Texmati (from Texas), Calmati (from California), and the original basmati rice from India. An exotic type of rice, basmati and its versions are thin and long stemmed. There are both brown basmati as well as white basmati versions of the rice. It has several wondrous properties. Rice is a contributor to the buildup of ojas and interestingly it is said to smell of burnt rice. Of all the rice varieties basmati is the most Sattvic and aromatic. It fulfills several functions in Ayurveda nutrition. Its rasa, or quality of taste, is sweet, that in turn offers a deep satisfaction. During the process of digestion, its virya or energetic impact on the inner digestive fires tends to be cooling. And finally, its vipaka or post-digestion effect is also sweet and provides a great sense of contentment and comfort.

Basmati rice can be cooked in an amazing variety of ways. Usually this kind of rice is used to cook special saffron infused pulao, biryani and sweet rice pudding with fruits, milk and speckled with a dash of ghee. It can also be combined with beans, nuts, cottage cheese, and vegetables for wholesome and nutritious dishes. Rice can also be spiced with a variety of herbs such as basil, cardamom, fennel, etc. Basmati rice is not one for everyday eating but for special occasions and generally families in India treat themselves with basmati every weekend.

What one doesn’t realize is the amazing properties of basmati rice in balancing doshas. It is specifically evident in the case of Kapha and Pitta dosha. Rice is the most nourishing and easy to digest. It offers more calories with less effort from the point of view of the digestive tracts. While in the West, brown rice is known for health reasons due to its bran and fiber content, Ayurveda advises long-grained and aromatic basmati rice. It is pure and nutritious while balancing physiology. Basmati rice builds body tissue and is very rich in prana or vital bio-energy. In fact plain rice is a good snack too and doesn’t really disturb the inner digestive fires. It is a valuable food for those recovering from an illness and a basis of Samsarjana Karma.

There are many benefits of including rice as a part of one’s diet. Ayurveda recommends the six fundamental tastes on the plate during meal times. This includes sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent. Rice is one of the major constituents of Ayurveda meals that add a flavor of sweetness. It is light, soft and nourishing when cooked. It also has a wonderful cooling nature and it thus plays an important role in balancing the Vata and Pitta doshas. To balance Vata dosha, one must consume well-cooked rice soaked and boiled in water. In Sattvic meals a dash of clarified butter (ghee) is added while cooking the rice. Desserts made with rice and milk are predominantly cooling and complementary for Pitta dosha. Basmati rice is great for such preparations. But such rice does in fact create a volume of mucus. Due to this reason it becomes important for those with Kapha dosha predominance to avoid eating rice too often. Dry-roasting it prior to eating is a good idea as it lessens heaviness.

One must be careful about how the rice is cooked. Rice that is cooked 'al dente', without enough water, can cause gas, bloating and constipation for Vata people. It must be cooked in water for a long while and finally strained from it. If rice gives one gas, then one must add extra water and cook it until it is soft and puffy. This is the right way to eat. Poorly digested food becomes poison or aama in the digestive tract. Rice has good medicinal value too and can counter aama. Ayurveda recommends white rice for issues like gas, bloating, or indigestion.

How to Cook Basmati Rice

How to cook the perfect basmati rice: In a medium pot combine one part rice and 2½ parts water and bring the same to a gentle boil. This must be cooked till rice settles below becoming puffy and a small amount of water remains in the pot. One must never stir the pot and let the water evaporate. Some people also put excess water and then strain it once the rice is fully cooked. One must finally remove the pot from the heat and then proceed to cover it. In an ideal situation its best to let the basmati rice stand for about 10 to 15 minutes prior to serving. To test if the rice is cooked well one can press a few grains between the fingers. Most people in India prefer distinct fluffy grains, not sticky or hard ones as they eat it with their bare hands.

The following are some of the well known varieties of basmati rice. Among indian varieties there are: basmati-370, basmati-385, ranbirsinghpura basmati, punjab basmati, Uttar Pradesh basmati, safidon basmati, haryana basmati, kasturi basmati, bihar basmati, mahi suganda basmati, super basmati and pusa basmati. Outside of India there are varieties called as texmati and pishori basmati.
Health Benefits of Brown Basmati Rice

Among all varieties of rice, brown basmati rice provides the most benefits for your health and nutrition. Brown basmati rice is basmati rice that has not had the outer bran layer removed. It is considered healthier as there are more vitamins and fiber present in the outer bran layer. Brown basmati rice contains about 20% more fiber than other types of brown rice. This fiber helps prevent the formation of cancerous cells in the body. Brown basmati rice is unprocessed (unpolished) and thus contains more nutrition and vitamins than other forms of polished rice. Brown basmati rice is perhaps the healthiest rice one can eat. The benefits of basmati rice are many, and they increase even more when you eat the rice in its natural unprocessed form as brown basmati rice.

According to the Canadian Diabetes Association, basmati rice has a "medium" glycemic index, which is lower than other varieties of rice, and thus better suited for those who suffer from diabetes.

Due to all these reasons and more, for centuries now, aromatic basmati rice has proved to be a great healing food. Ayurveda supports its properties and recommends it to every human being. It is not expensive and can be a part of your regular meals.

Diabetic Healing with Neem

Diabetes is a silent killer affecting around 346 million people across the world. The projections of the World Health Organization indicate that diabetes related deaths are doubling as we speak. This phenomenon was said to have started in 2005. These mindboggling numbers pose to be a huge threat for global health. Diabetes is also the fifth leading cause of death in the United States with over 17 million affected every year. So what is the long term solution to overcome this ordeal according to Ayurveda?

Even though the various causes are complex, to an extent the menace can be curbed with a monitored diet, maintaining a decent weight with regular physical activity and avoiding major vices like tobacco and alcohol. Individuals who are on the heavier side with less physical activity, especially those above the age of forty are easily susceptible to the disease. Those with a family diabetic history or health conditions like glucose intolerance, high blood pressure and cholesterol, can also succumb to diabetes. Unhealthy food habits and irregular meal timings can accelerate the same as well. Further, certain ethnic groups like Asian, Hispanic and African-American face greater diabetes risks.

Some of the common symptoms of diabetes include fatigue, excessive hunger and thirst, recurrent urination, blurred vision, lack of concentration, numbness and loss of sensation in hands and feet, sudden weight loss, frequent infections and slow healing of bruises. Getting tested is the first step of treatment. Any of the usual symptoms must propel a person to get an immediate diagnostic test. The prevention of this disease is well within our grasp and so any delay is not advisable. With proper medication, dietary checks and exercise routine, diabetes can be kept under control. For a more holistic and long term cure, the alternative therapy of Ayurveda has proved its strength over centuries. Its very premise is intrinsically holistic and preventive in intent. In fact there has been a lot of interest in bringing this effective treatment into the mainstream fold.

Diabetes primarily occurs when the pancreas does not produce sufficient insulin or when the body is not compatible with the grade of insulin secreted. Modern medicine suggests daily insulin injections to beat this chronic metabolic disorder. Again certain bodies may portray some kind of insulin rejection. The truth is that for overcoming diabetes entirely one must rejuvenate the body completely. Only then should one up the insulin level according to the need. Diabetes and hypertension are due to metabolic imbalances and allopathic medication provides only a temporary respite.

The classical Ayurveda name for diabetes mellitus is prameha. During the vedic times it was commonly known as asrava. It is also called madhumeha. Madhu means honey whereas meha means flow or more specifically urine. The name is attributed to the fact that during prameha, the ojus or life essence is expunged through sweat or urine. Diabetes is taken very seriously under this ancient health system as is called a maharoga or major disease. It is considered to be a diseases caused by the aggravation of Vata dosha. Vata dosha underlies the body state based on wind and dryness. Deterioration in the body, which is the destruction of the dhatus or body tissues, depicts an impairment of the Vata state. This is why diabetes harms all vital organs.

A compromised digestive system can also bring forth a severe attack of diabetes. Impaired digestion results in the amassing of certain impurities know as ama. This can accumulate in the delicate pancreatic cells and damage the internal insulin production over time. In Ayurveda, diabetes is of 4 types as per its effects on body constitutions. These include Vata (10 types of diabetes), Pitta (6 types), (Vata 4 types) and juvenile diabetes for children which are often congenital (sahaj pramehi). The disease affects five sheaths of the body – food sheath (annamaya kosha), energy sheath (pranamaya kosha), mind sheath (manomaya kosha), intellectual sheath (vijnana maya kosha) and bliss sheath (anandamaya kosha). Just like IDDM and NIDDM classification, there is also krisha pramehi (lean diabetes) and sthula pramehi (obese diabetes). Over eating and food induced diabetes is known as apathaya nimmitaj.

The Ayurveda based treatment of diabetes is directed at rejuvenating the body not just for sugar level balance but also to foster a positive change in the patient’s life. The Chrakha Samhita has elaborate chapters on the origins and cures. The various herbal formulations work on the deep seated root causes of the disease. The medication bolsters the person’s immunity, enriches the digestion process and also helps a person to lead an overall healthy life. Along with dietary and life style alterations, the Ayurveda medication rejuvenates the body’s cells and tissues, allowing a proper production of insulin.

Since the days of yore secret ingredients have been used by sages to effectively treat diabetes and lower the blood sugar level. Today’s supplements are replete with these cures. The best part is that there are no side effects of these natural organic formulations. Based on Type I, Type II and gestational diabetes (along with micro classifications of Ayurveda), the wide range of formulations have been customized. These are aimed at restoring the balance of the doshas and the normal function of the dhatu tissues.

Some of the commonly used herbs and plants include fenugreek, turmeric, onion, ginger, wood apple, bitter gourd, neem (Azadirachha indica), sagar gota (Ceasalpinia crista), nayantatra (Vinca rosa), gurmar leaves (Gymnema sylvestrae) etc. The nutritional therapy includes diet charts based on viryas for each dosha. The rasa and gunas are also taken into consideration. Ayurveda food is of medicinal nature and is known as ausadam. These foods tackle the deviant doshas.

Ayurveda treats diabetes with a multi-pronged approach. Along with medicinal and nutritional therapy, specific exercises from the 5000 year sister science of Ayurveda, i.e. Yoga is also advised. Panchakarma (the five purification processes) is also very useful in restricting diabetes. In simplistic terms Ayurveda’s healing methodology uses four types of techniques – reduction, detoxification, balancing and nourishing. Thus, it is a miracle therapy for diabetes.
