Ayurveda Tips For Cervical Spondylosis


Cervical Spondylosis is a disorder of the vertebrae. This is a type of arthritis that occurs in the cervical vertebrae. It is caused by the compression of the nerve roots in the cervical area caused by muscular spasms and erratic movements. The spine movement can aggravate thepain in the neck and is usually accompanied by sleeplessness and loss of memory. This condition is found mostly in people who travel a lot and the bumpy roads put strain on the spine leading to cervical Spondylosis. It can also be due to aging and long hours of sitting in wrong posture.

Ayurveda

In Ayurveda Cervical Spondylosis is known as Griva Sandhigata Vata. Ayurvedic therapies are safe and efficient methods of healing using mostly herbal medications and natural processes combined with diet and lifestyle modifications. Ayurveda looks at diseases as the disturbance in the balance of doshas in the body known as Tridoshas, namely vata, pitta and kapha. Correcting this balance will cure the illness and bring the body back to its healthy condition through the purification processes of Panchakarma and nourishing diet and medications. Thus the body’s resistance to diseases is strengthened.

Symptoms

  • Pain or stiffness in the shoulders, neck, elbow, forearms and hands
  • Giddiness on swift movement of the neck
  • Difficulty in neck movements
  • Severe Ache at the back of the head

Herbs used in Ayurveda to treat Cervical Spondylosis

Guggulu is an herbal resin which is highly effective for treating cervical Spondylosis. It is used to prepare a tablet known as Simhanada Guggulu. Its laxative properties help to cleanse the digestive tract of impurities.
Triphala is also used as a purgative that is useful in treating cervical Spondylosis. This will regularize the bowel movements in the patient.
Other Treatments
Hot fomentation for about half an hour on a daily basis can be given to relieve pain in the neck and vertebrae.
Basti: Enema is known as basti in Ayurveda. It is very effective in cleansing the toxins from the body due to the three doshas. The enema contains medicated ghee or oil with an herbal decoction to cleans the colon and to strengthen the muscles.
Abhyanga: This is whole body massage using herbal oils to correct the imbalance in the body, mind and spirit providing healing at the deepest level.
Shirodhara: A continuous stream of medicated oil or buttermilk is poured on the forehead of the patient along with head massage to relax both the body and mind and to rejuvenate the whole nervous system.
Pizhichil: Medicated oil is poured and rubbed on the body.
Greeva Vasthi: This is a procedure done to relieve the neck pain. Mahanarayana Thailam is used in a gentle massage over the muscles of the shoulders and neck.
Shastrika Sali Pinda Swedam or Navarakizhi: This process involves herbal decoction and warm milk in which a bag containing specially cooked rice is used to massage the body.
Diet Recommendations
Diet should consist of vegetables like drumstick and bitter gourd, neem flowers etc. Sour foods like curd, fried substances and pulses should be avoided.
Lifestyle Recommendations
  • Exposure to extreme cold conditions should be avoided.
  • Exercises that put extreme pressure on the neck should be avoided.
  • Always maintain a comfortable posture.
  • Morning walks and light exercise is recommended.
